Nurturing the Creative Seed inside All of Us

Why Sewing Elements?

Kathy Sewing

The name Sewing Elements was chosen because I see the skills you learn in sewing as building blocks, just like atoms in nature create molecules that connect to create the beautiful world around us.

That is how I view the building blocks of sewing, one skill builds upon the other in sewing to create something wonderful. You write your name, crocheting or knitting a stitch, and moving the soil to plant something, in the beginning you are shown ways to do this and you practice and do it. It is now part of you, and sewing is the same, skills you can use your entire life.

I picked up needle and thread when I was 4 yrs old. Going into what we called my mother's sewing draw, found it a treasure of fabric, needle and thread. I will never forget when I wanted to make my mother a potholder (in my young brain it was), and I discovered that the motifs I wanted to sew together with this bold black outline would not work unless I left a border of white background to make the seam "llowance. I got to try again and presented to my mother the hand sewn "potholder", complete with black border.

Being self-taught I enjoyed taking fabric and making things. When I went to the library, discovering the non-fiction sewing section I took out a book on making hand sewn doll clothes. I was about 8 years old when I started to play with my mother's sewing machine, a Necchi Super Nova and between my father teaching me and using the manual I learned a lot by what I call "Playing with the machine", a term you will hear me say in class.

I am now and experienced sewing instructor, taking the time in making sure that students understand each concept before moving forward. The students teach me by helping me understand approaches that help them and finding out what they want to learn.

I love the input that students give me. As I teach, I also add to my building blocks of learning to share with you. I am also a Martha Pullen Certified Heirloom instructor with forty lessons to help guide you through project-based learning.

Sewing is fun.
Sewing is relaxing.
Sewing is creative.
Sewing is expressive.
